Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh is known for its rich culture and tradition. The city is referred as Sanksar Dhani meaning cultural capital of Madhya Pradesh. It was a center of Gond and Kalchuri dynasties. The culture of the region was then influence by Maratha and Mughal rules. Jabalpur is prominently a Hindu dominated city, though the considerable number of people from other religions especially Muslim are live there.    

The city of Jabalpur like other major cities of Madhya Pradesh such as Bhopal and Indore has become a cosmopolitan city housing the people of different cast, religions and regions. One can find Marwari, Bengali, Marathi, Kannadiga, Telugu, Tamil and Punjabi people living in Jabalpur, the largest city of state by area. Yet the indigenous culture and tradition of the city has not been affected by cultural varieties. People especially now young generation have now taken liking to modern style of dressing, though the traditional costumes of the region are still in use in rural parts of   Jabalpur district.    

 Fairs and festivals form the integral parts of any culture.  Festivals in major cities of Madhya Pradesh like Indore and Bhopal have been influenced by the changed times and their cosmopolitan aspect. The city of Jabalpur too is no exception to it. Festivals celebrated there have also not escaped from the influence of modern changing times. Nevertheless celebration of the festivals in Jabalpur offers the insight of rich cultural and traditional life Jabalpur people.  Traditional arts and crafts of the region also serve as an important part of Jabalpur culture. Durry designing is the one of the most beautiful art form of Jabalpur. It is known for its unique design and beautiful color.
