 Leh is second largest district in India in terms of area. It is located in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. It was earlier the capital of Ladakh, a Himalayan kingdom. It is located at the altitude of 3524m. Leh is connected to other parts of India by two roads. National highway 1D connects it to Sri Nagar via Kargil. Other one is Leh Manila highway but it can be troublesome as there are many high passes and risk of land sliding along the road. However you can fly here as Leh has its airport called Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee. It is well linked by several flights to Delhi, Sri Nagar and other major cities of India. Leh is not connected by rail.

What to see:  

Though Leh is situated in remote parts of India, it houses many places of interest and historical importance. Palace of King of Ladakh is situated in Leh. At present it is being renovated as it was in ruined condition. There are many beautiful views outside the palace.

Namgyal Tsemo Gompa :

 Namgyal Tsemo Gompa is a Buddhist temple. It was built in 1430 and remains open only between 7am to 9am for the Morning Prayer.

Soma Gompa :

 Soma Gompa is another Buddhist building in Ladakh. Karma Dupgyud Choeling is monastery of Karma Kagyu tradition.

Shanti Stupa :

 Leh also house Shanti Stupa, a Buddhist religious building. It is built by Japan and worth visit place.

Pangong Tso :

 Pangong Tso is beautiful lake situated at the altitude of 4350m. Its blue water surrounding majestic mountains makes it perfect tourist destination.

War museum :

 War museum in Leh is interesting place to visit. The museum has the display showcasing history, tools of the trade related to army operation, replica of Siachin battlefield.

Donkey sanctuary :

Donkey sanctuary in Leh is another place of attraction. The sanctuary is nothing but a home to helpless donkeys. It remains open for the people throughout the day. Offering juicy carrots and small donation is most welcome here for the welfare of these animals.

   Leh also offers its tourists adventurous activities like trekking and river rafting. It has a number of trekking routes while Zaskar and Indus Rivers offers tourists thrilling experience of white water rafting.
 
Best Time to visit: 

 April to July is the best time to visit as its offers a splendid view of beautiful natural surronding of Leh.


Other details: 

 Tibetan antiques, replicas are most preferred shopping items of tourist in Leh. Main bazaar is the place where one can get these Souvenirs. The bazaar also houses many sweet shops which sell sweets along with Samosas, Chana Dal with Puri and other Indian foods.
