Jharsuguda is a town and the headquarters of Jharsuguda district in
the state of Orissa. It is an emerging industrial hub especially in metal and
cement sectors. Owing to number of thermal power plants, Jharsuguda is often
called as power house of Orissa state. Jharsuguda is a railway junction which
comes under Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway Zone. Jharsuguda Jn
falls on Kolkata-Mumbai rail line and is served with several trains.
Jharsuguda hosts several places of interest in and around
it. Jhadeswar temple, Shri Phadeswar temple, Rock Paintings at Bikramkhol,
Koilighughar waterfall at Lakhanpur and Kolabira fort are some of them. Hirakud lies just about 65 km away from
Jharsuguda. It is famous for its Hirakud dam which serves to be the largest
artificial dam in Asia. Built on Mahanadi River, Hirakud Dam is frequented by
large number of tourists round the year. Located just about 50 km away from
Jharsuguda, Sambalpur is famous for
several scenic and religious spots. Samaleswari temple and Ghanteswari temple
are some of prominent places of worship in Sambalpur. It also hosts a gorgeous
waterfall frequented by number of tourists.
Samarsata Exp (Mumbai-Howrah), Azad Hind Exp (Pune-Howrah), Tatanagar-Bangalore
Exp, and Howrah –Porbandar Exp are some of the trains which pass through Jharsuguda Railway Junction. Ranchi
airport serves to be the closest airbase to Jharsuguda. National Highway no 200
also connects the town to other parts of Orissa state and rest parts of the
country.
