Tourist attractions: Pondicherry (Puducherry), an erstwhile French
colony, is a city and capital place of Pondicherry, one of the seven Union
Territories of India. Many places of interest situated in and around the city
make it a major tourist destination visited by thousands of tourists from
different parts of the world.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram: It is one of most frequented places
in Pondicherry. Founded by Sri Aurobindo in the year 1920, Sri Aurobindo Ashram
is a centre of Vedic and philosophical studies. Sri Aurobindo was a philosopher
and a freedom fighter. The Ashram is based on the philosophy of harmonious
community. It also stresses the need of learning world religion. The Ashram
witnesses a number of devotees and the tourists thronging there from the across
the globe.
Pondicherry Museum: Pondicherry Museum is another place
worth visiting in the city. The museum which displays many artifacts related to
the history of the region is an interesting place to visit in Pondicherry. Some
of the artifacts housed in the museum belong to the first century AD. Roman
articles found at Arikamedu are interesting possession of the museum. Besides,
the museum also showcases the fine collection of paintings, sculptures, and sea
shells.
Promenade: Promenade is yet another attraction
of Pondicherry. Blessed with long sea shore of Bay of Bengal, Promenade serves
as a perfect picnic spot for the locals and visitors alike. War memorial and
the statue of Mahatma Gandhi are other highlights of the place. Do not forget
to visit Chunnambar resort which is famous for its serene beaches. The place
also offers the tourist many water sports activities.
Historical Angro-French Textile Mill, Sacred Heart of Jesus
Church, the Botanical Garden, the Mansion of Ananda and Bhartidasan are other
attractions of Pondicherry.
