Festivals in Vadodara
Vadodara is the cultural capital of Gujarat state. It is
popularly called as Sanskari Nagari meaning cultured city. Festivals celebrated
there also offer the insights of rich culture and traditions of the people of
Vadodara. Vadodara is known for its vibrant culture and traditions. The city
celebrates all major festivals of India with much pomp and show. Along with the
Deepawali and Dussera the city also hosts its prominent festival and cultural
events with great zeal and zest.
Among prominent festivals of Vadodara the festival of Navratri
is of upmost importance. Navratri literally means nine nights and that is
exactly the festival is celebrated for nine days (nights). Navratri is a
colorful festival of the state of Gujarat. The festival is celebrated in honor
of goddess Durga. Though the festival is also celebrated in other parts of the
country, celebration of the festival in Vadodara and other part of the state of
Gujarat assumes significance owing to its attractive dance forms of Ras and Garba
performed on the occasion.
The International Kite festival is another major cultural
event hosted in Vadodara along with other parts of the state. The Kite festival
is organized every year on 14th January. The festival also coincides
with the festival of Uttarayan which is also known as Makara Sankranti in other
parts of the country and is marked by the cosmological event of the Sun
entering into the axis of Capricorn. On the occasion of the festival in
Vadodara thousand of colorful kites are seen flying high in the blue sky
offering fascinating view to the thousands of visitors gathered on the
occasion.
