Arakkonam
Arakkonam is a town in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu state. It
is a major railway junction in south India and is just about 67 km east of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil
Nadu. Arakkonam Railway Station is a part of about South Railway, Chennai
Central. Mosur and Takkolam are nearby rail stations to
Arakkonam. Tirupati situated about
80 km to the north is the nearest main railway station to Arakkonam.
Arakkonam is home to Food
Corporation of India (FCI) godown which serves to the second largest FCI’s
godown in the country. It is used for storing all types of grains for a longer
period of time. Arakkonam also houses a
runway of naval air force of Indian Navy. INS
Rajali NAS (Naval Air Service) runway in Arakkonam is the one of the longest air force runways in the entire
south Asia. Besides, there are some places of interest situated around the
town.
Thiruthani situated just 13 km away from Arakkonam is a famous pilgrimage place in the region. It is known
for its Sri Subramaniya Swami temple.
The temple is dedicated to Subramaniya Swami, an incarnation of Lord
Murugan. It is also popularly known as Thiruthani
Murugan temple. This ancient temple was built in the 9th century.
Arakonam a small village located near Thiruthani is another place housing
several places of religious significance.
Kanchipuram is place worship in the region. It
is just 28 km away from the town of Arakkonam
and is referred as golden city of thousand temples. Sri Kailasanathar
temple, Kanchi Kamakshi temple and Kanchi Kudhil are some of prominent temples
of Kanchipuram. Vellore (70 km) and
Sriperumbudur are other places of attraction around Arakkonam.
Arakkonam is major railway junction near Chennai. Arakkonam JN Railway Station is served
many trains connecting the town to Chennai,
Vellore, Tirpuati and many other parts of the state and the country. Several
state highways like SH-61, SH-126 and SH-58 run through the town. Chennai
Airport serves to be the nearest major airport to Arakkonam.
