Alipurduar
is a town and municipality in Jalpaiguri
district of the state of West Bengal. Perched on the banks of Kaljani River at
the foothills of Himalaya, Alipurduar is
a major gateway to Bhutan and north eastern state of India. The town is
situated in Dooars region which is dotted with timber-filled forests, wildlife
and beautiful natural locations. Alipurduar has rich culture especially tribal
culture as the region is populated by considerable number of tribal people.
Rava, Santhal, Mech and Rajbanshi are some of tribes which have conserved their
rich cultures and traditions.
Alipurduar
is not a famous tourist destination itself, yet some places surrounding the
town are worth visiting. Buxa Tiger
Reserve near Alipurduar is famous wildlife area in West Bengal. Rich in
flora and fauna, Buxa Tiger Reserve is has been recognized National Park. It houses a number of Bengali tigers and
other species of animals and birds. One
can spot a number of elephants making their way through Chalipata Forest
located near the tiger reserve. Jaldapara
wildlife Sanctuary forms another part of eco-tourism in the region.
Rajabhantawa,
Raimatang, Jayanti and Bhutanghat are other places with great wildlife tourism
potentials. Chhota Sinchula, the highest peak in the region with an altitude of
about 1733, offers picturesque views of the Buxa forests. Alipurduar also houses several trekking trail which taken by the
tourist to explore beautiful natural surroundings.
Alipurduar
serves to be the divisional headquarters of North Eastern Frontier Railway. Alipurduar Railway Junction is
connected by several trains to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Lucknow and many other
cities West Bengal and the country. The town is also connected by major state
highways to other parts of the state.
