        Birur is a small town in Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka state. It is a major railway junction located on Bangalore-Shimoga rail route.  Birur Railway Junction comes under South Central Railways, Mysore Jn. At this junction rail line coming from Bangalore splits into two rail lines with one of them leading to Shimoga and other one to Chitradurga. 
        The town of Birur is home to numerous temples which are frequented by number devotees from different parts of Karnataka state.  Sri Mylaralingaswamy, Sri Antharaghatammanavaru, Sri Rama Devaru and Sri Veerabhadraswamy are some of prominent places of worship in Birur. The town is also famous for its annual fair held at the temple of Sri Antharaghatammanavaru. The fair is organized in the month of Jan-Feb and is visited by thousands of devotees from all over Karnataka state. Bullock cart racing is a major attraction of the fair. Sri Veerabhadraswamy Rathotsava, Ganesh Chaturthi, Ammana Habba and Dussera Mahotsava are prominent festivals celebrated in Birur. 
         Birur Railway Junction is connected by several trains to Bangalore, Hubli, Hassan and many other cities of the country. A national highway and several other highways also connect the town to other parts of Karnataka and rest part of the country. Bajpe airport at Mangalore serves as the closest airbase to Birur.
