Aligarh is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated just 140 km south east of Delhi and is famous for its educational institutions. Among educational institution situated in the city, Aligarh Muslim University is the most famous one. Aligarh is sometimes referred as the City of Universities.  It is also known as the city of locks due to several lock industries situated in and around the city. 
Aligarh was known as Koil or Kol before the 18th century. This historical significant place has witnessed the battle of Aligarh which was fought in 1803 at Aligarh fort.  In Aligarh there are some places which serve to be rich historic and cultural heritage of the region. Aligarh Fort, Dor Fortress and Sir Sayyed Masjid are some of them. 
Aligarh fort is a main attraction of Aligarh. It is the place where the battle of Aligarh was fought in 1803. There is another historic fort named Dor Fort which is perched in heart of the city. The fort was built during the 16th century and presently it is in ruined conditions. The tomb of Baba Barchi is located at Kath Pula in Aligarh. The city is also home to a couple of Jain temples. Ibn Sina Academy of Medieval Medicines and Science is another major attraction of Aligarh. It is the place where one can spot a huge library on history on medicines and science. It also contains a large museum based on cultural and historical heritage of India. 
Aligarh Railway Junction is well connected by several trains to Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow and many other parts of the country.  Two National Highway namely NH-91 and NH-93 run through city connecting it to many other parts of Uttar Pradesh and the country. Agra, the city of Taj Mahal, is just 90 km south of Aligarh and is connected to it by NH-93.
