Think of Kerala and then Onam is the next word that hits your mind suddenly. Kerala, India’s one of the most beautiful states, celebrates its equally beautiful festival of Onam in its Chingam (August- September) month every year. Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, is also the most important festival of the state. The festival, celebrated over ten days and each day has a unique name, consists of many activities including religious, social, cultural and sports (especially the water sports) activities.

Music, dance, folk songs, snake boat race and of course the delicious hygienic foods are rare things which you will get to see in Kerala during the celebration of Onam festival. Snake boat race, locally known as Vallamkali, is an important part of the Onam celebration when hundreds of boats are seen beautifully decorated and ready to compete each other. The race is held on the Pamba river and witnessed by thousands of visitors come from across the country and even from abroad.

 Kerala celebrates this charming festival of Onam with great enthusiasm.  On the occasion people are seen putting flowers mats in front of their homes, wearing the new cloths while women are seen adorned with heavy jewelry. Onam also marks the beginning of the new year of Kerala. People also visit the nearby temples to seek blessing for prosperous life. Onam abolish the social gaps between the people and brings them together irrespective of their cast, religion, sex and age to celebrate it.
